Ernie, Try connecting from the Mac to itself, using the 192.168.x.x (LAN) address, and see whether that works. Try something like:
Telnet 192.168.x.x 5900 "Connect to port 5900 on machine 192.168.x.x" You should see "RFB 003.008" printed, or similar. If this works then your VNC server is working. If not then either the server isn't working, or your Mac has some sort of firewall in effect.
