Sounds like a fault in either the "host" PC's hardware, or it's network
stack installation.  Assuming that the "host" is a Windows machine, you may
find it helpful to try removing all the networking software and reinstalling
it, and if that doesn't help, to try "repair" of the OS using the system
disks.

Note that if you installed Service Pack 1 on those PCs before you added the
dial-up networking (i.e. if it wasn't part of the initial installation of
the OS), then you need to reinstall Service Pack 1 again - this is true
every time you make change to the operating system configuration, because of
the way Service Packs work.
