I am having simillar problem.
As one person suggested, I have the java viewer working on port 443 (https i
think) and I can now get part way there using the java viewer - When I enter
http:\\myaddress:443, I get the java applet appearing the in the internet
explorer (RealVNC logo appears), then a popup window comes up (with title "VNC
Viewer: Connection details") where i specify the 'Server' and 'Encryption'. I
hit OK and I get another popup 'java.net.ConnectException: connection
refused'....

I searched all the archives for various related key words but I was not able to
find a solution :((

So, John, I try port 443, maybe you will get one step forward and them maybe
good people on this list will help us both from then on :)

More setup details:
In the VNC Server Properties, on the connections table (as shown here
http://www.realvnc.com/v4/winvnc.html#5) I have both the 'Accept Connections On
Port' and 'Server Java Viewer via HTTP on port' set to port 443

Thanks!
