my understanding is that the system gives a black box and tells the
video cards gpu to render <X> inside the black box. where ever the gpu
sees the black box at, it places the rendered output of <X> inside.

Hmmm! I came across this overlay thing when I tried to get a PCI TV
tuner card to work with onboard Graphics. Couldn't get it to work.
What exactly is this overlay business?
