Barry, How long are you leaving the desktop alone for when you get the connection reset by peer message?
Are you running any firewall (including Windows Firewall) on the broken XP box? Are the two laptops connecting over identical network connections? Are the two laptops using identical hardware & drivers? Are the two laptops connecting to the server at the same time?
