this is more common that you imagine I guess.
I am currently an employee of one company (let's call it A), working with computers/guys of another company (let's call it B). The company I work for, B, surely has VPN for all their computers in here. The company I am employed by, A, has a VPN although for their own internal work. As an employee of A working at B, I have to deal with stuffs that B should not know, or at least does not mind. Therefore, I have some secured connection between my B's dayly using computer and any A's machines, allowing me to remotely read confidential emails for example.
