Thanks - I was using the complete McAfee Security Centre, and having deleted

the firewall software still had the problem. However when I deleted the 
McAfee VirusScan the problem disappeared. It would appear that VNC is 
treated as a virus by McAfee (there is some information on their website 
about it) I don't quite understand how it works, however suffice to say I 
have deleted the McAfee software and am now using AVG viruscan and VNC is 
working fine.
