I have a setup where I can access any of several systems behind a firewall using VNC, including the "gateway" computer if necessary.

I simply have a copy of Openssh server running on the computer (XP Prof) attached to the internet/LAN ( it has 2 network connections- one to the LAN, and one to the ISP). I attach to it using a ssh client ( Putty on Windows for example, Mac OS/X comes with one) from "outside" by stipulating "port forwarding" on the command line in order to access the other system on the "internal" LAN I want to connect to. Then VNC on my remote client is simply directly to the "local" port, and ssh routes it to the "real" system I wish to connect to.

Openssh is free, and guarantees a secure connection.

The tricky part is that many IPs are non-static and get reassigned with each reattach to the ISP. I use a program like DirectUpdate on the gateway system to have it "update" any changes to the IP address so I know ( even if I am away traveling) what the new one is if and when it changes.
