That 'elevator shaft area' (love that, thanks Mike S) is supposed to
move a 'page' at a time (i.e. a window full)...

In VNC's case, this should be the same... e.g. if you adjust a full
screen worth to a quarter size so the window contains the top left
quarter of the remote desktop, a single click in the 'elevator shaft
area/not thumbscroller region' under the scroll bar should scroll a
whole page, so you'd see the bottom quarter of the remote desktop. Same
goes for horizontal (turbolift shaft area hehehe) - clicking to the
right of the scroll bar should move a windowfull at a time.

Hope this helps... It is something I always do, a bit like the scroll
wheel on a mouse, it's quicker to move around than dragging scroll bars
when you want to move a page/window full at a time, so when VNC moves a
little bit at a time, it makes it tedious :)

Something that could be altered?

Regards,

Keith.

Subject: re: Real VNC scroll bar behaviour

Keith
I assume you are running vncviewer under M$Windows as you dot say you
are
using Java viewer and Iexplorer is rarely used elsewhere.
Note that under M$Windows scrolling, the "thumb-bar" scrolls up to the
point
at which the click&hold-down has occurred and then stops. For click and
release it seems to approximate
to the appropriate dimension of the viewing area being scrolled (i.e.
height
or width).

To me, a VNC (non-browser/Java) window appears to behave like all other
M$Windows so maybe I'm missing some subtlety there and anyway, do not
have
TightVNC to check against.

Whichever way this discussion pans out (unintentional pun) regarding the

"normal" operation,
I thank you for raising the issue as for 2 decades I've scrolled bars
and
nudged arrow heads in various scrolling windows and currently never
(conciously) thought to perform a controlled click in that "[not
thumbscroller]" region. Maybe I used to :-{.
Now I can enthuse/bore/impress people with a new "did you realise
that..."
conversation
as well as my customary "use the {[shift/]tab key | space-bar} rather
than
moving the mouse"
(or vice versa as appropriate) gambits.

Scrolling wide and/or tall windows quickly using this feature is
something I
am now
(again?) using whenever possible.

cheers, Mark

p.s. I look forward to [re-?]discovering the name of the "[not
thumbscroller]" region as I feel
sure I used to know but have forgotten!
