Are you using a router? If so, to access either computer from remote you'll need to forward some ports from the outside world to the local PCs. Check http://www.portforward.com for details on how to do it. You can also check http://faq.gotomyvnc.com for VNC-specific tips-n-tricks. Finally, you'll need to make sure that the Windows XP firewall has an exception for VNC's ports (5500, 5800 and 5900 -- 5500 is for a "reverse" connection, 5800 is for the Java viewer [also requires 5900], and 5900 is for the standard VNC binary viewer.)
