I'm not familiar with this machine. Can you get a terminal window on the local display? If so, you ought to be able to SU to root (unless they have that blocked) and install that way.

My problem is that it does not give access to a commend prompt. Does anyone know how to get to the command line (hot keys, function keys etc)? ctrl-alt-f1 does not work. After that: exactly what do I type at the command line to install VNC on the linux server? Or can I copy the extracted files to a specific destination folder (via Windows Explorer)? I hope someone can help me on the Linux side. The Windows version is working just perfect on my home network (all the hazzle with network setup on scanner/copy/printer is history - VNC gives immediate access to all the scanner facilities. Great).
