Hello, Wez:

1) I am using the latest version of vnc from RealVNC (Version 4.1.1).

2) I am ruuning the server on a Redhat 9 installation. The X Server is from the original RH 9 install CD. According to Redhat documentation, it is version 4.X. The first line on the XR86Config file also shows version 4. I checked the release dates of X86Free and Redhat 9 and suspect that the X server is probably a 4.2 or 4.3 version.

3) I did reproduce the problem, and then checked to see if the Linux PC is still up. It is. I have a Jabber IM server running in the background. As the display of the Linux PC is frozen, the IM Server keeps on supporting multiple external clients exchanging messages without any problem. It seems that only the GUI/display is frozen.

4) The Linux PC has an ASUS K7M motherboard, using an AMD Athon CPU. The graphic card is a PCI-based ATI Xpert 2000 (Rage 128) with 32M memory.

5) I also tried running VNC without authentication. I followed the suggestions in http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/x0.html. The Load "vnc" line is added to the module section of XF86Config, and add only one line (Option "SecurityTypes" "None" ). I encountered the same problem as previously reported.

Any suggestions or fixes? Or I should just replace the graphic card. Thanks.

Regards,

YS Kwong

YSK,

What version of vnc.so are you using? (This will be logged to the X
server's log file on startup e.g. to /var/log/XFree86.0.log on many
systems).

Are you using a very recent X server on the Linux system?

Can you try reproducing the problem and then try pinging the Linux machine
to verify that it is only the X process that has hung?

The only explanation for this sort of behaviour that we've found is that the graphics card drivers don't implement the require image-grab call properly, and manage to hang the graphics card. Can I ask which brand of card you are
using?

Regards,

Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.

Subject: Native Display Problem : Server PC frozen, viewer
window went Black

I have recently setup VNC (Version 4.1.1), with the VNC
Server running on a
RedHat Linux 9, and VNC Viewer on a Windows XP (SP2).

It is working fine and I can access the server desktop 1 on
the server, using
either a browser or viewer from my XP. I can even get a
Gnome desktop.

When I tried to share the native X display, I ran into
troubles. Please
help.

I followed the steps as suggested on
http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/x0.html

1) I checked the directory
"/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions" and found the
module "vnc.so" already there. So no need to copy at all.
2) I edited the XF86Config file in same directory to include
Load "vnc" in
the Module Section
3) I also edited the XF86Config file to include the following
in the Screen
Section:
        Option "SecurityTypes" "VncAuth"
        Option "UserPasswdVerifier" "VncAuth"
        Option "PasswordFile" "/root/.vnc/passwd"
I restarted the RedHat Linux PC, and started a vncserver
desktop 1 with
"vncserver :1"

On accessing the server from my vncviewer from my XP,
everything worked fine
when I tried to access desktop 1.

On opening up the vncviewer to access the native desktop 0 with
"domainname:0", my vncviewer showed a black applet window
with a tiny curor
that could be moved around. But nothing else could be done.
On the Redhat
server side, the whole screen froze ( I am not sure if Linux
crashes or the X
Window system crashes). The only thing that can be done is
to reboot the
Linux PC.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Regards,

YSK
