Michael,

Check the pixel format that the viewer has requested from the server in the
two cases, using the Connection Info tab - you will probably find that the
pixel formats differ between using the XP system directly and using it via
RDP.

Apple's Remote Desktop, although based upon the VNC system, is known not to
be RFB-compliant and so it's quite possible that it doesn't handle some
pixel formats correctly.
