I downloaded, built, and installed the latest RealVNC...but still no go
(btw...I needed to symlink /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts to /usr/share/X11 to get
this to work).

Although I hadn't installed a firewall (that I was aware of), this seemed more
and more like a port blocking issue (even though iptables indicated no rules
being applied). So, I installed webmin and it's iptables firewall module and
fought fire with fire...I turned on that firewall and explicitly ALLOW'ed all
incoming traffic.

VOILA. I can now connect to my vncserver from other boxes. (Now time to tighten
down that firewall).

There are scattered reports of other Ubuntu users having problems like this,
while others seem to have no problems. So it remains unclear how I did this to
my machine, or whether it was something the installer did when I first
installed Ubuntu Breezy Badger. But had it not been for these problems, I
would not have gotten the latest vnc server, webmin, or firewall!

Thanks for all your help,

Eric

Hmm... that would appear to be a problem on the Ubuntu box. What version of
VNC is running on that box? Can you install RealVNC on that one instead of
whatever's on there currently?

Plus...I have the same problem trying to access the vncserver from
another linux box.

Do you have the XP firewall running? If so, try putting in an exception
for
the VNC Executable... even if it's not running, enable it, put in the
exception and disable it. There is anecdotal evidence that the XP
firewall
can block things, even if it's not "enabled."

Also, any other firewall/antivirus/security software on the XP box?

Subject: Can't connect to vncserver running on Ubuntu Linux box

I am running vncserver on my Ubuntu Linux box (fresh install, Breezy
Badger), and trying to connect to it from my windows XP box, but have
not been able to (I can connect to other linux and windows-based VNC
servers from this box on my network).

I CAN connect to this server from the localhost. From my windows box,
however, I do not even get a log-in prompt. Vncviewer 3.x states
"Failed to connect to server" and vncviewer 4 (set to use only 3.3
protocol) states "unable to connect to host: Connection refused
(10061)". I can find no trace of VNC errors in the system log.

Here are the responses to the troubleshooting steps:

>Can you "ping" the VNC Server from the Viewer machine?
YES, and vice-versa

>Are the Viewer and Server on the same LAN?
YES

>Are you sure the VNC Server is running?
YES. telnet-ing my vncserver on port 5900 yields response of RFB
003.003

>Can you get to the VNC password prompt?
No.

>Is the VNC Server restricting connections?
No.

Can someone advise me what to try next?

Thank you,
-Eric Kort
