Not to sound like a jerk or anything like that, but if you can not justify EE purchase you have 3 options:
1. Hack the code of free edition to fix whatever you are not happy with.
2. Wait until the next version of VNC and hope that changes from EE will propagate in to free edition. They always do if you wait long enough.
3. Find some other tool that satisfies your requirements.

I guess you can not expect much from a free (as in beer) tool. IMHO, VNC free edition is a great tool for the price you pay.

Alex

VNC Viewer Enterprise Edition has improved support for non-ISO-Latin-1
keyboard input, so you may like to try that out.

As someone already said on this list in a different case, we cannot justify
the expense to buy VNC Enterprise. We have to stick with free edition.

I didn't understand your comments about Alt+S causing output in a
command-window to be halted, since you are presumably typing into a VNC
Viewer, not into a command-window. Can you explain what you mean?

I'm typing into a terminal (dtterm) window *on the desktop viewed by VNC*.
