Hi all,
sorry for responding to this old thread.

I'm interested in rotating the screen with xrand using Xvnc.
Is that possible ?

For example:

Xvnc runs on a linux PC , Xvnc set to resolution 800x600

since the screen on another machine is physically rotated by 90 degrees,
I'd like Xvnc rotating all the output so that the
vnc client on the other machine sees still a 800x600 but with rotated contents.

Is that possible in Xvnc or does it not support XRAND rotation yet ?
Or is the default linux version of Xvnc compiled without RAND support ?

I tried to use the xrandr cmdline tool on a Xvnc display but it says extension missing.

Please let me know,

thanks,
Benno

Hi John,

You are incorrect.

Resizing the desktop when using VNC Server for Windows is done by resizing
it in the normal way for Windows. Resizing X desktops is possible using the
XRANDR extension, which is something that we'll probably be adding support
for in VNC server soon.

What David appears to want is for VNC Viewer to tell VNC Server how large
the desktop should be, which is something we're looking into supporting,
too.

Well, I'm not a developer or anything, so I won't say that I know for sure, but I don't think what you're wanting to do is possible... any of it. In *nix, you can start servers automagically at startup, but I don't believe there is *any* way to dynamically resize the desktops, either in Windows or *nix or Mac. Some distributions of VNC will allow you to essentially magnify the remote desktop, but that's all it is, is a mangification -- you increase the size of everything, including the icons, mouse cursor, etc. For what you
want, you probably need either Citrix or PC Anywhere, or similar app.

Anybody? Did this make it to the list?

Hi all.

I've been looking for info on dynamic desktop resizing, and hoped someone had the latest. I'm looking to do a couple of
things. First,
I'm running the server in Linux (RH Ent 3&4) and the client
on Win2k/XP
and Mac (Chicken of the VNC). The first thing I'm looking for is a way to start a server
session from
the client side, like Citrix or Exceed has.

Related to that, I'm trying to figure out how to
automatically start the
server with the largest dimensions that can be displayed on
my client,
somehow automatically feeding the screen size.

Finally, it would be great to dynamically resize the
desktop size since
I often reconnect to a server session from various clients
on machine
with different screen resolutions. I see the "Allow
dynamic desktop
resizing" option in the VNC client, but can't find anything about support for this in various VNC servers. I also read
somewhere that
because of the limitations of the X server, this can't work
with the
Unix/Linux server. Can someone shed some more light on this?

Thanks,

David
