I want to
run a high-res desktop on a low-ses screen.
Possible solutions:
1. Use an X11 server that support shrinking of the displayed desktop to the
native solution of the graphics card (ATI Radeon 9000, in particular).
Current state:
* I've not found any such server.
2. Use a tool for displaying the desktop of a dummy X server scaled.
Current state:
* One can use gnome-mag but this requires installation of Gnome, which is a
PITA. Furthermore I'm not even sure whether gnome-mag supports shrinking
or only magnification, which I don't need. Description of the

3. Connect a VNC client to a VNC-Server that supports shrinking of the
desktop.
Current state:
* x11vnc seems to do what I want (untested). However, it needs to connect
to a real X-Server which is not needed in my case and which probably means
a lot of overhead. I'd prefer a VNC server which includes an X server.
4. Connect a VNC client that supports shrinking of the remote desktop to a
VNC-Server
Current state:
* krdc does what I want (tested!), but it requries installation of KDE. I'd
prefer a solution that is more light weight.
Pointers to additional software solutions are welcome.
