In my opinion, the easiest method is this (I assume your mom is on Windows and since you run Linux you know how to do port forwarding):

1) Open a port on your side for RealVNC (I always run stuff on non-standard ports) 2) Run a listening viewer on your machine making sure it is listening on the port set up in #1 3) Find your IP by going to www.whatismyip.com (if you do not have a domain or fixed IP) 4) Test whether got everything right by connecting to your listening server from an external source (NOTE: If you try this from your LAN, it may fail because some routers do not handle internal traffic going to your WAN port correctly!) 5) Have your mom (or someone) install RealVNC on her machine. Cancel out of install dialogs
6) Have your mom do a reverse VNC connection. The way to do this is:

A) Have her look for the following icon in the system tray (bottom right of screen):

B) Right-click on the icon and pick the "Add New Client" entry like so:

C) In the dialog that pops up, type in (or copy & paste) "<your IP/domain name>:<port opened in #1>" (without the quotes):

D) Press the "OK" button.

7) Make sure you set up the options on your Moms RealVNC, but do not accidentally lock yourself out in the process!

There are other options others that may even be easier for your mom such as EchoVNC:
Server: http://echovnc.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/10.html
Client: http://echovnc.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/1.html

but that may take more setup on your end. Of course if you're running Linux, setting up EchoVNC or other options may be trivial for you. :-)

I am very new to RealVNC and now am using it between computers, linux and
windows. I really appreciate the functionality. My question:

Mom lives on the west coast, I'm on the east. She only has a 52K dial-up
modem. When she has computer problems, I walk through the checks and fixes
with her over the phone. Invariably, right click gets mixed up with left
click and she is not conveying precisely what is happening on her box.
Terminology becomes an obstacle--the usual stuff for the home-user. I want
to work on her box via RealVNC to show her what to do and teach her how
things work. Can I have her install VNC and then work over the viewer
through her 52K modem? If so, please note special hardware configurations
that may be required. I have the standard broadband modem/router hookup.
This would be a great teaching tool.
