Sean, The option you're referring to has nothing to do with VNC compatibility, but determines whether ARD will pretend to support the old VNC Password authentication scheme, allowing standard VNC Free Edition viewers to connect. Since ARD fundamentally doesn't implement the RFB protocol correctly, it's not clear that using this option will help at all!
We have informed Apple of the compatibility issues with their product, but haven't received any response, I'm afraid.
