Hi! First: I'm running VNC (4.11) internally in a private network. While all nodes are connected to the same switch/router which connects us to the Internet, we are not going out to the Internet to make these connections; they are direct, within the same network segment. I just wanted to clarify that, as I see a lot of Q/A related to Internet/NAT problems, which is not my case.
Okay! Well, here is the setup: Server: WinXP Home SP2 Viewer: WinXP Pro SP2 User-switching disabled on both (i.e. oldstyle logon screen) Network: 172.16.0.0 Router/Switch: SMC Barricade. I have also tried using a simple, ordinary, hub (3Com), to eliminate the possibility that switching, routing, firewalling, etc., could be at fault The server has Trend Internet Security (PC-Cillin), and both have WinXP Firewall, BUT I have disabled all firewalls for troubleshooting, including the one on the router. I have looked at all of the firewall logs on both computers, and have seen nothing realated. I have also tried disabling the password. I am able to initiate a connection from the Server to a listening Viewer, but cannot reach the Server (running as a service) from the Viewer. I can ping each computer from the other, so routing is working. When sniffing (using Ethereal) on the Viewer, I can see lots of traffic back and forth between both computers (browse, SMB, ICMP, etc). When I initiate a request from the Viewer, I see it go out (on port 5900 - and I have tried other ports as well - ), but no answer. If I initiate from the Server, I see the handshake go through, and all connects with no problem. Here's an odd thing : I was initially getting "Connection timed out" messages, and my sniffer was showing one-way requests (SYN) only, but after initiating the successful Server-side connection, and then disconnecting, my Viewer-side connection produced a SYN (Viewer to Server), then SYN, ACK (Server to Viewer), then ACK (V-S)... THEN... FIN, ACK (S-V), ACK (V-S), FIN,ACK (V-S), ACK (S-V) and, finally, a message box shows up saying "Connection Closed" (or "terminated", or something like that... can't remember... Final oddity: VNC used to work before, between these specific computers, running the same OS'es, configs, etc., and suddenly stopped working without any apparent cause. It's been a while since then, as I haven't had time till now to look at it carefully, but I really can't think of any sorts of system changes that could have had these results (but my memory may be playing tricks!). I am pretty much the "System Admin" in this house (yep, home setup). The Server is our family computer, but no one is allowed to do any system changes (no one ever does) or install anything without my involvement/approval. The Viewer is my personal computer, and NO ONE uses it; it's locked down tight. Well, Sorry for rambling on so long, and I hope I provided enough info!
