John, thanks again for the suggestions; In Services (on the Server), I have: Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
They are all set to "Manual", and only the middle one, "Remote Access Connection Manager", was started, but it looks to be related with my Trend Internet Security, not Remote Desktop. I always disable Fast User Switching, as it's a security risk (bad idea to display the names of all of the computer's accounts!). I looked again at the event log, and noticed that only the Server-to-Viewer connection (5500) logged events; connection attempts in the other direction, which is what I'm having problems with, doesn't seem to log anything at all! Earlier in this list, I posted an event, but I'm not certain which/where/when event produced it. I think I'm going to have to install Ethereal on the Server and sniff its side.
