Just to add to what others have said, typically, the first VNC server on
Linux will run on 5901, NOT 5900. Try connecting to that. Also, you will
need to run "vncserver" on your linux box if you intend to try and connect
from the Mac to the Linux box. You can run this from your local console or
telnet or (better) SSH session to access the desktop. To access the 5900
desktop, you'll need to run something other than "vncserver." There are a
lot of FAQs out there on how to get VNC running to show :0/5900. I don't use
anything like that since I *only* remote into my linux box and never need to
show the local console. :-)
