Hello all, I've recently encountered the issue with VNC (free edition) where I can connect and login to a remote computer, but then I receive a blank, black screen, followed by a disconnect about a minute later.
I've searched the archives for this mailing list and found a similar thread entitled "Blank Screen Problem" dating to September of 2005, started by a Mr. Pat Boland, and mostly answered by a Mr. James Weatherall. But it looks like the thread did not complete (or I could not find the end), and it stopped midway through. I'm writing to revisit the problem because I think I have the exact same problem! Actually, the symptom that most interests me is best summarized in Mr. Weatherall's message from 9/3/2005: ----- If the cursor doesn't move at the server and you don't get any updates then this suggests that your network connection has been dropped. VNC will take a short while to detect this because it relies upon the TCP/IP stack to do so. ----- My problem here is that I'm connecting to my father's WinXP SP2 laptop installed with VNC 4.1.2 (free edition). Once I connect, I get a blank, black screen. My cursor *does move* at the server but I cannot see anything on my screen. Some other things I have noticed are: - if I refresh the screen on the client side, the server drops my connection - when I view connection info, the line speed estimate is at 0 kbit/s - the event viewer on the server shows no error messages, though it shows two events where the connection is established, and then closed due to timeout Both my machine and my dad's machine are on cable and DSL modem, behind router with the appropriate ports opened. The weird thing is that my work laptop, a Dell with XP, *can* connect to the server, and it is the only machine that can do so (out of the three I have with me). My other two machines, an IBM Thinkpad with XP and a Redhat 9 box, all encounter the black screen. Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! -Justin _______________________________________________ VNC-List mailing list [email protected] To remove yourself from the list visit: http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list
