I think you are asking the wrong question....

I boot my servers into run level 5, but I don't start XWindows, leaving the 
console in text mode.  This fullfills the (assumed) purpose of your inquiry,
ie. save the XWindows resources on the server, while allowing VNC into 
your system.

P.S.  On the text console, after logging in you can crank up Xwindows
by executing the command startx (or was it xstart?)
