Hmm.

So you are saying  that I use the vnc java client - directly out 
of the box - and connect to my server anywhere, anytime, without
concern for proxy issues on the local machine because I inherit the
proxy settings from the browser? 

And hence avoid the cumbersome setup issues with regards to ssh and 
whether *it* can tunnel through the proxy with an outgoing connection?

I wasn't aware that you could do this. You sure can do it with 
Gotomypc - and its really, really bugging me that there is a
connection method that's easier to use on windows than on unix.
