I find it's easiest to test with telnet. From the machine where you plan to
run the viewer,

telnet server 5900

(If you're server is running Mac OS or Unix and your display number is not
0, add the display number to 5900). Then if the remote computer answers
with:

RFB 003.008

you know connectivity is there. If this doesn't work, check firewall
settings on the server first of all to make sure that port 5900 is open. On
windows this is somewhere in the control panels. If the client machine is
blocking it, Windows should pop up a message about it and allow you to
unblock it.

Could you be a little more explicit about your network setup? These machines
are connected via wireless, or a hub, or a switch, or a router?
