The only way found to circumvent the problem was to install the i386 package of the vnc server, along with the required dependencies. Then the vncconfig utlilty works fine, although it's a bit depressing needing to go back to a code supposedly written for 32 bit processors!

At least I can cut & paste between my local and remote machines.


Brilliant! That did the trick!
My repository was already set up for 32-bit packages (Firefox and Flash) so installing vnc-server as 32bit package was easy.
