Mattias, MTU is "Maximum Transmission Unit" & determines the maximum network packet size that the TCP/IP stack will use when sending data. It's supposed to be determined automatically but in some situations, particularly when using VPNs, that seems not to work.
Setting the screen to a smaller size won't normally help with MTU issues - you really need to get your network fixed, if that is indeed the problem.
