A real solution, no.  A workaround, yes.  Type your @ in notepad and
copy-n-paste.

    Word has the function to change characters into special characters. 
Maybe it's this?  Otherwise, make sure you're using the same keyboard in
local and remote systems.  Last suggestion, when you type the @ sign in
Word and nothing is displayed, have you tried to press the spacebar
immediately after?
