Greg,

When you say "log in as a different user", I assume you mean "authentication
to VNC Server as a different user" - the user credentials you use to connect
via VNC need not be the same as those you use to actually log in once you've
connected to the server. 

Are you using a VNC configuration (.vnc) file to connect?  If so, then
connect directly (whichout using the file) and, once connected, press F8,
select Options... and use the Load/Save tab to save a new configuration
file.
