I downloaded the free version current about 4 months ago, which
I think is still the current version. VNC worked perfectly on
the target machine under the previous version (though that
version had the security issue). There is only one user logged
in (though user switching is enabled......)

Is this XP with Fast User Switching enabled? If so, and the user you're
talking about isn't on session 0 (or is it session 1?), then this behavior
makes sense.
