It's so easy to get Sling Player to connect from work, through the
company firewall to the Slingbox server running at home, and I can
happily use the keyboard and mouse to remotely control the satellite
receiver, and get TV pictures back, just like the screen I wish I could
get using VNC.

All I had to do was type in the address of my workplace socks server
into Sling Player running on the PC at work, and that was it.

Why on Earth can't VNC work as easy as this?

Why do I have to mess about trawling Google, forums and who knows what
trying to figure out how to install some sort of SSH software on my home
PC first, and get it set up just right, or think about figuring out how
to get familiar with software that runs java applications as an exe just
because it looks as though that might be the only way to find a version
of VNC with a socks or proxy option that I might be able to type in just
like Sling Player, maybe?

What is this all about? I read on one of the VNC forums that they get
the request for "how do I access my home VNC server from the workplace
through the firewall", once a WEEK at least, so why don't they include
the same option as Sling Player and simply let you type the proxy
address into VNC?

A lot of people need this option, it's one of the best potential uses
for VNC, but figuring out how to do it is as clear as mud and it's way
too complicated. I've wanted to be able to VNC into my home PC from work
for 2 YEARS now, but I was never able to crack this damned SSH thing. It
was taking up too much of my time trying to get it to work, so I had to
give it up. Last week I purchased a Sling Box, and lo and behold! I can
get remote control to my home, through the workplace firewall in 2
minutes!

Please, please, please, can the people who write VNC include the same
option that Sling Player has, and allow us to simply type the address
and port number of the workplace socks 5 proxy straight into VNC like I
can with Sling Player? It makes the difference between a wonderful piece
of software that works, or a pile of junk that is an endless source of
frustration, which I'm sad to say is my experience of VNC to date.

P.S. If anyone can advise me how to get VNC, Tight VNC, Ultra VNC or
anything similar to work in this way on Windows (from a Windows XP
client at work to a Windows XP or preferably Windows ME server at home)
without me having to install anything on the server PC at home apart
from VNC server, or having to follow extraordinary complex instructions
that make no sense, I would be pleased to know how it's done, thank you.
