Abi:
Heya. Similar to the Yoics solution is EchoVNC:
http://www.echovnc.com
The idea is that both sides of the VNC connection (server
and viewer) make an independant "login connection" to publically
available server. This new server then acts as a "relay point"
between the two sides of the VNC connection, without either having
to adjust their firwall settings. A little more latency, a lot
less hassle. :)
There's a few services out there like this now: FogCreek
has a subscription service called CoPilot, [EMAIL PROTECTED] has their
PCHelpWare, there's also TeamViewer, Yoics, Hamachi (now owned
by LogMeIn), EchoVNC, and probably others. Each are a little
different, but all essentially solve the problem you're working
on...
cheers,
Scott
As an
alternative to using port-forwarding (especially if you get a
dynamic IP
address from your broadband provider), you could use a VPN.
One such
alternative is Yoics, which works like an instant messaging
application -
except your buddy list is populated with devices. You
can even share folders
to other users. Since I'm a founder of the
company, I'm clearly biased, that
said - the software is free & you
can download a version which includes the
free version of RealVNC
here: http://alpha.yoics.com
any questions, feel free
to ping me directly or via the mail list.
