    Well, first thing first, the latest RealVNC free edition is 4.1.2. 
So your 4.0 free edition seems a bit too old.  Have you tried an up to
date version?

    Next, how was your VNC server installed?  Using "service mode" or
"user mode"?  If you want to log in and log out with VNC also working,
you should use "service mode".  Make sure you've installed this mode
with an account having ADMINISTRATOR right.

    Last, make sure you don't have this problem when there's no VNC.
