Delvaux, The display you're seeing is normal - you are seeing an X11 desktop with a console & the Twm window manager. Just change the twm line in ~/.vnc/xstartup to refer to whichever window or session manager you'd prefer and next time you start a VNC desktop, that's what you'll get.
