James, Claudio, Thanks for the feedback. It's the weirdest thing. First of all, it's true, you have to give Windows some time to start the service. I've done some more experimenting and what I discovered is that when I boot up my machine and Windows is waiting at the login screen, I can't connect succesfully to VNC on the first attempt. When I try a second time, it works. This is weird, but at least it's workable.
