Yes, tight encoding uses Zlib and it should compress such screen
efficiently. Although hextile really does not like such dotted
patterns, I have not noted any problems with logoff screen when tight
encoding was in effect.

At current moment I cannot verify that once more with remote Windows
machine but KDE on my Linux uses exactly the same technique to darken
the screen on logoff and I've checked performance a minute ago: the
whole such screen update took about 2 or 3 seconds when I used tight
encoding, and about 130 seconds in case of hextile encoding. My
connection is 56K (actually about 33Kbps).
