I have read all of the posts regarding this issue. To be honest, I did not anticipate this much opposition to a VNC Newsgroup. Personally, I would rather use a newsgroup than a mailing list. Also, while it is certainly true that there are some who can get e-mail but not web or newsgroups, these are the exception not the rule. However, I believe that it is possible to create a newsgroup where every post to the newsgroup are also sent to the mailing list. I still have to do a little more research before I can say definitely that this is true but I believe it to be true. I have not figured out yet how this is done nor have I identified any potential security issues. What I can do is post to this mailing list how this process would work, including any potential security issues (e-mail address posted in the newsgroup, etc) when I finish my research on this issue. We could then hold a vote on this list to determine if the majority of list users want the list and newsgroups linked. I will abide by the wishes of the majority. Also, since this list is operated by the guys at AT&T Cambridge Labs, I would also have to get their permission to link the two. Regardless of whether the newsgroup and mailing list are linked, I plan to continue the process of creating a VNC newsgroup because I think it will better support the VNC user community (myself included). If this vote sounds like a reasonable thing to do, I will request that someone besides myself organize the vote and count the votes so that there is not even the appearance of bias in the vote counting. Regarding the name of the newsgroup, while I have suggested comp.software.vnc, I do not yet know what the final name will be for this group. This will be decided by the discussion that follows my Request for Discussion (RFD) post. As you know if you have been following this thread, I started with alt.comp.vnc and moved to comp.software.vnc at the recommendation of the experts at alt.config. A newsgroup created in the comp.* hierarchy has the advantage that it will be automatically picked up by most news servers. An alt.* group will not be picked up unless someone asks for it specifically. Therefore, if I can create a VNC newsgroup under comp.*, we will have a much wider distribution. I will continue to keep this list posted on my efforts in this area.
