i recently installed vcn on a win98 computer which is connected to my home LAN
via a wireless pc-card. (the pc-card talks to an access point transceiver, which
is connected to a router). the install went fine.
from a win-2000 workstation (direct ethernet cable connection to the router) --
where i have had vcn installed for almost a year and have it working fine with
two other PCs (win2000 laptop and RH 6.2 linux workstation) on the same ntwk
(also direct ethernet connection) -- i attempted to 'vcn' to the win98 laptop. i
got authenticated ok and the win98 screen eventually appeared (it took awhile.
my wife has artsy wallpaper: landscape garden stuff, high-color, etc).
however, i get a tiny dot as a mouse and when i try to do anything to the vcn
window nothing changes. however, when i look at the laptop, i see that the
change has occurred. (eg, opening a desktop shortcut in fact executes on the
remote laptop, but the image in the workstation window does not change). i made
vcn-preference modifications to reduce the laptop wallpaper to 16 colors and
refreshed the window. the wallpaper clearly lost its lustre, but the rest of the
screen never properly refreshed and gave the impression that it hung.
much later, the win98 laptop was shutdown and the next day rebooted. it paniced
coming up and went into SAFE-MODE. i knew the only modification made to the
maching lately was the installation of vnc. i uninstalled it and the laptop
booted fine. strange...
i'm a bit reluctant to muck around with the laptop much since it's not my
machine and i fear crippling it somehow. but i'm curious if anyone has some
thoughts about what might be happening. the only real difference between the
win-98 laptop and the other PCs on the network (other than OS) is the fact that
the laptop is connected via a wireless connection. i can't imagine why that
should matter, but it is a difference.
