Yes, unfortunately there are lots of old apps that only know how to use 8-bit PseudoColor visuals. Worse, there are some that only work if that's the default, even if other visuals are supported. A temporary workaround might be to run two instances of Xvnc, one set up for 8-bit PseudoColor, and the other set up for 24-bit TrueColor, and two viewers, and to point the apps at the appropriate server. Naturally, one couldn't copy/paste, drag/drop, etc. between apps running on separate servers. And having to eat twice the resources, deal with two desktops, etc. wouldn't be acceptable to most people on an ongoing basis.
