Subject: Server dies viewing 8-bit desktop using 24-bit desktop

Hello,
I'm still using TightVNC1.2.2 (had a bit of an ordeal trying
to upgrade, haven't found the opportunity to try again yet).
I'm accessing a sun-based server (solaris 8) from a WinME-
based viewer over a local ethernet LAN. The server defaults
to 8-bits per pixel, and I'm using hextile. Say the server
is SunHost:8. Everything is fine.
I start up a 24-bit/pixel server called SunHost:24 and
connect to it from WinME using hextile. From the SunHost:24
desktop, I launch a viewer connecting to SunHost:8, referred
to as localhost:8. So SunHost:8 conveys an image of its
desktop to the viewer within SunHost:24 using raw encoding.
At the same time, SunHost:24 conveys an image of its desktop
(including the viewer connected to SunHost:8) to my WinME
viewer using hextile. Or so I thought.
Unfortunately, that's not what happens. As soon as I
connect a viewer to SunHost:8 from SunHost:24, the
SunHost:8 server dies. This happens regardless of whether
SunHost:8 is initially being veiewed from WinME. The log
file shows the error message:
X connection to SunHost:8.0 broken (explicit kill or
server shutdown).
xterm: fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe) or KillClient on
X server "SunHost:8.0"

Thanks if anyone has any hints. This problem doesn't
happen if I launch a viewer from an 8-bit/pixel desktop
to connect to another 8-bit/pixel desktop (again using
"localhost:x").
