IHS Writing Competition:
The Institute for Humane Studies -- which both Sasha and I have been
involved in, and which I much like -- passes this along:
The Institute for Humane Studies is sponsoring its first essay
contest this spring with $5,000 in prizes. . . . The contest is
open to all full-time students or anyone 25 years old or younger.
Essays must be submitted online by March 1, 2005 and address the
following question:
In "The Creative Powers of a Free Civilization," Nobel Prize winner
F.A. Hayek posits that only in a truly free society can the
creative powers of individuals be maximized. In an essay of 2,500
words or less, please answer the following question:
To what degree are the creative powers of individuals influenced by
the structure of the society in which they live? What legal,
social, cultural, or educational conditions would be needed to
fully realize their creative powers?
