John Jay -- coauthor of The Federalist and the first Chief Justice of
the U.S. Supreme Court -- was widely reviled by many in the U.S. for
the treaty he negotiated with England. Here's one response, reported
by George Pellew, John Jay 282 (1898), quoting John Jay, Second Letter
   on Dawson's Federalist 19 (1864):

James Savage, once president of the Massachusetts Historical
Society, told his grandson that he remembered seeing these words
chalked in large white letters around the inclosure of Mr. Robert
Treat Paine [a signer of the Declaration of Independence,
Massachusetts state supreme court justice, and apparently a
     "[1]staunch Federalist]"]:

Damn John Jay! Damn every one that won't damn John Jay!! Damn every
one that won't put lights in his windows and sit up all night
     damning John Jay!!!

   Reminds me of [2]delinking.
