Bill,

Remove the computer account from the domain controler. It's pretty safe... If you mess up, you can recreate the account for that computer.

Subject: [VOPmail Beta] OT: change computer name in Win2K

Greetings:

We have just successfully migrated ModusMail to a new server.  All went well in the migration, but I'm working on a few "clean-up" items that have me stumped.

We are running Win2K.

My old server was named "VOPMAIL".  I installed the OS on the new server and gave it the name "VOPMAIL2".

After the migration, I renamed the original server (was VOPMAIL) to "VOPMAIL1". Life is good.

Next, I attempted to rename the new server (was VOPMAIL2) to "VOPMAIL", but I get an error message indicating the account already exists.

Each of these servers are members of a domain and neither are the PDC.

The new server is completely functional sending and receiving mail and that makes life real good.  While the name change may appear cosmetic, it has changed the name of the server in message headers which has fouled up some customers that are routing or trashing messages based on "received from" rules sets.

Is anyone aware of a procedure to reuse a machine name within a domain?

Thanks,

Bill Rakowitz
