the problem is solved. I had logging enabled in the worldgroup plugin and it makes a log that just keeps growing and growing and growing. I'd advise anyone using wg to authenticate to check the log settings under the plug-in configuration and make sure that they aren't logging more than they need there. the help files suggests not to log at all unless tech support asks you to.
