I have been working, 70 hrs last week, on the checkout of a power plant
Distributed Control System. This control system will go on to on a
power plant in Morresville, NC. Things have changed since I last worked on
one of these. The operator stations used to be constructed of dedicated
hardware. Now the operator stations are Del PC's and the communications is
handled with sun servers. The drops in the plant, were the plant equipment
interfaces to the computer system, are now the only dedicated
hardware.
The logical control programming used to involve the writing of scripts,
methods, and codes. A knowledge of UNIX and object oriented language
was required. Now logic blocks (and, or, flip flop, and
sequencers) are picked in an AutoCAD window and pasted into the logic
scheme. With the simulation we have you can see the logic
working. The lines logic activate and turn red. I can
concentrate on the control of the process. I do not have to
speak three letter computerize. The animation of the
graphics still requires codes and scripts. I really like the Emerson
Ovation Distributed Control System. I hate the long hours that I am
working. I also need more money. I can't take it for much
longer.
I had hoped that the fundamental sources of energy would have
progressed this far.
