Maybe I've been thinking about this exactly backwards. In light of the carbon-arc experimental results, maybe Tatiana Makarova's "magnetic buckyballs" are just tiny bits of ordinary iron embedded in carbon, produced by CF-like transformation under high temperature and pressure. No electricity needed.
