This seems a bit weak... "Residual radiation exposures in this area are unknown, as Port Chicago was used also as a decontamination port for ships exposed to nuclear blasts in the Marshall Islands"
You'd think there would be substantial variation in background radiation, seperable from the decontamination work. Of course, I suppose you could argue that the harbor was used for this purpose because of the detonation. Also, two explosions were reported. The first, small explosion likely threw up a great cloud of unexploded powdered ordinance. The second, massive explosion would have then been this crude fuel air explosive being detonated. If you've ever seen one of these types of explosions, it's quite like an atomic detonation, with a large mushroom cloud. Interesting hypothesis, though. And given the history of our experimenting on unwitting soldiers, it's certainly possible.
