[snip] I have a recollection of there having been someone who came up with an aluminium based exhaust catalyst for cars, back in the early days of catalytic converters, but nothing seems to have come of it. Perhaps Al might work for fuel cells too, though it may end up being bulkier. It would certainly be cheaper.
