Academic web sites held for ransom (but who cares?)

It appears that someone is going around buying up old, defunct academic 
conference web sites and holding them for ransom, by advertising 
pornographic products on them. See, for example:

ICCF10 conference

Robotics 2000 and Space 2000 conference. Albuquerque, NM, USA, February 28 
- March 2, 2000

http://www.spaceandrobotics.org/
This scheme will not work because no one cares about an academic conference 
after it is over.
